Transmission problems 1998 Ford Escort SE

Just changed transmissions in car and now it will not shift gears can hear it whinning new transmission has overdrive cable old transmission did not but car console showed car to have overdrive would this cable cause it not to shift and if so how do we adjust cable? Please help transmision was purchased from salvage yard and matched everything except the cable however cable was not on old one person who installed transmision said it was overdrive cable and did have a place to attach to the engine via mount // if wrong tranny wouldn't it not work at all? And also why does counsoule show overdrive if not made for overdrive tranny//had codes checked after install showed not getting temp read and other tranny codes hope this other info helps please help me.

Cable, I think you got the wrong tranny! That's more than likely a detent cable, Dowshifts the car under heavy acceleration. You hook it to the throttle and then adjust it. If it's not connected it won't stop the car from driving, just downshifting, When you say you got a new tranny. Where did ya get it?
