1998 Ford Escort temperature

My temperature gauge is stuck at the top but the car is still runnig ok.
I have checked all the fuses and they are fine.
Would you be able to tell me what else it could be.

Suspect faulty engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor located on left rear of engine.

Could be the engine coolant temperature sensor, engine temperature gauge switch or the gauge itself or a wiring problem-
