1998 Ford Escort Crank will Move but not all the way way ar

This escort has an issue where the crank will rotate about 350 degrees but will not go all the way. It moves freely within the operational area but stops dead in either direction at the same location.

Hi
Did timing belt brake? If yes then piston is hitting valves. If belt in place suspect valve bent or broken and stoping piston travel.

Timing belt was intact and I pulled the valve cover but did not see anything suspect. Can you tell from the top or do you have to pull the head to see the bent/broken valve?

If it is bent and sticking open should see spring collapsed. If head broken off then maynot see anything odd. What was happening when this ocured. Running and shut down? Have you checked to see if Timing belt may have sliped?

Don't know how it happened. I got the car that way.

I have the belt off. I turned the cam till it looked like the valves were all closed. Should I put the belt back on (timed correctly of course) then give it a try? By the way, I am doing this by hand. I'm not cranking the motor over. I'm not sure what the original problem was. The guy told me that the timing belt needed changed and I stupidly took his word. I'm not out anything but I would like to get it running for a back up vehicle.
