1997 Ford Escort fuel gauge not working

1997 Ford Escort 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

We have a 1997 Ford Escort & the fuel gauge is not working. We have been told that on this model you have to replace the whole tank as the gas gauge & the tank are all one unit. Can you tell me if this is correct or not? Thank you

That is incorrect, the pump can be replaced as one unit and not the tank and pump. The pump is accesable under the rear passenger seat.

Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear with my question. I'm asking about the fuel gauge inside your car that tells you have much gas you have in the tank, not the fuel pump. Currently, the gauge is not working and we have to fill the tank up and then keep track of the miles we have driven & hope we don't run out of gas! I'll be looking forward to your response. Thank you!
