1997 Ford Escort engine code

The service engine soon light came on in my 1997 Ford escort. I had the code checked and it read P1443. Mfg. Auxiliary emission control . Something to do with a faulty purge unit. Is this something I can fix myself or do I need to take the car to a dealer repair shop?

Require special tool not all shops have like a smoke machine to check for leaks
