2002 Ford E-Series Van oil leaks

Newly purchased, never driven it myself. I see lots of oil residue on the heater vents on the floor, and spray from this above it on the wall panels. There really is a lot of it.
Also noticed an oil leak at a connection in the exhaust system under the center of the van. Is this indication of a blown seal somewhere, or is there something terribly wrong with the engine?

Hi, I'm attaching photos of the vent with the oil all over it. I hope this helps you help me figure out what is going on. The former owner says the van has never leaked oil, and doesn't burn any. He has not had the heater on since April, and doesn't know anything about this situation.
I really appreciate your help on this. Thank you !
