1998 Ford E-Series Van V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

The van started chugging after I dropped the kids off at school this morning. I had 8 miles to go and I was not sure if I was going to make it home. The Service Engine light was flasing very fast so I decided to put the emergency flashers on. They also seemed to be flashing fast as well. The van did not stall but it did act like it was getting worse as I drove. My husband will be home to look at it this afternoon. Where should he start?
