1999 Ford Contour Engine check light

1999 ford Contour 2.5 V6. Engine check light is on and stays on. Ran a diagnostic check. One code reading P0401 (exhaust gas recirculation - EGR - flow insufficient detected). Is the EGR valve bad or could it be somthing else? Thank you.

Not necessarily the EGR valve but could be as well as EGR regulator or the VSV. Could also be caused by pinched vacuum hoses or carbon deposits in the intake manifold.

I suggest cleaning the EGR valve first before doing any replacements.
