I got the code number P1383 "Camshaft position, Timing over retarded" of my 1998 Ford Contour SE. The timing belt and transmission oil were changed at 90000 miles. Recently, only at local driving, the rotated speed seems vary and it can be felt some shakiness when it is given very little gas started from stop to move slowly. Also sometime it turns down after stop at the intersection, but it cannot feel any thing on highway. Is it the problem of camshaft or the timing belt?

It could be the sensor was installed wrong when the belt was done, take it back to the shop that did the job. Or worse, the belt is off by a tooth.

Thanks first.
Do you mean the cam sensor? How come if the belt is off by a tooth, the car can still run well on highway? If the problem by a booth, should I change the belt or gear wheel or both?

The timing is retarded too far so yes it's either the cam sensor is off, or the belt, one or the other! I don't think replacing the gear will fix it. There is a tool to install the cam sensor.
