1998 Ford Contour 62,000 miles. I was driving about 75 mph on an upgrade on the interstate and the car's gauges suddenly went down. The speedometer went to 0 the rpm's went tp 0 my gas gauge went all the way down and the check engine light came on. I first tried to put it in neutral and I shifted back to drive and the car jerked. So, I slowly pulled off the interstate and the car will not go out of first gear now. What can the problem be?

I think that you have two problems, or more now. First the car died at speed, sounds like an electrial problem. Then, if I understand you correctly, oh you didn't state if it was auto or manual, you put it in to drive while coasting to the side of the road. Not a good idea, if auto. I would jack the car up and check the linkage to the tranny, if not jammed sounds like you will need a rebuilt on the tranny. After fix on tranny, then you would troubleshoot engine. Or at least get it back into park. Hope this helps.
