Transmission problem
1998 Ford Contour Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I have been having problems with my car lately. It seems that the gears aren't catching.I put it in drive and it doesn't go, I have to put it in 1st gear and slowly press the gas and once the car starts to pick up speed I have to put it in drive.A local mechanic told me to put natured alcohol in where you would put your tranny fluid.I did that now my car sputters and the check engine light is on?Can you help? I'm a single mom on disability and live in New Hampshire.I need a car but can't afford a new one and I don't qualify for local car charities.

First, I never heard of that remedy in the 30 years I have worked on cars. As far as the transmission, it may just need serviced. However, since the check engine light is on, that is where we need to start. Take the car to a nationally recognized parts store and have them scan the computer to identify why the check engine light is on. Most will do it for free, so there is no money out of pocket. Let me know what you find. Ask them to give you the code they find so I know exactly what we are dealing with. Also, ask if they will check the trans fluid.
