The speedo stopped working and now the engine managment light has come on the dash board, would they be connected and how can I resolve the problem?

Yes, they are probably connected. Replace the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) located on the gearbox. Have the vehicle plugged into a diagnostic scanner to locate the cause and turn off the light !
