The car starts. I can drive it about ten miles, when smoke starts coming out the exhaust and water boils out if the reservoir. The temperature gauge rises. What could be the problem and where do I start?

Hello,

This sounds like your vehicle could be having a problem with a stuck thermostat. A thermostat is what your vehicle uses to keep the coolant at a certain temperature so your heater will blow hot air. When your coolant reaches a certain temperature it opens letting coolant flow through the radiator where it gets cooled by the radiator. our vehicle's thermostat possibly is stuck closed, not allowing the coolant to flow. I have included a couple of links below for you to go to:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-an-engine-thermostat-works
https://www.2carpros.com/articles/replace-thermostat

Please go through these guides and get back to us with what you find out. If this was the problem great, your vehicle is fixed. If not we have other instructions for you to get it fixed.

Thanks,
Alex
