I am trying to figure out what all I need to change to put a 2002 4.7 into a 2005 truck. My 2005 engine is blown so I want to swap them. I know about the tone ring difference so I want to know how to change the computer and wiring harness and need to know if I have to change anything else to make it compatible.

Hi,

Is there a reason you want to change the computer? I would suggest keeping the wiring/ computers and modules original and swap the sensors and such on the engine itself.

If you do that along with the tone ring, you shouldn't have wiring issues. Anytime you try changing the wiring from different years, colors, routing, and so on becomes a nightmare.

I would be happy to provide the wiring schematics for both years (powertrain management schematics) if you want.

Let me know.

Only problem with that is the EGR valve. My 2002 engine has no place for one on the driver side head. My heads in the 2005 are warped and I've heard they can't be resurfaced. What a pain in the butt, lol.

Hi,

If the original one doesn't have a place for the EGR and the replacement does, it's not a big deal. You can either purchase an EGR delete plate or leave the EGR installed. It won't open.

If it was the other way, then there would be federal emissions violations. However, your original engine didn't have it, so it doesn't need to have it. (If that makes sense).

Let me know if I got that the correct way. LOL

Take care,
Joe

My check engine light will stay on and wont pass inspection. I'm in the process of changing out the wiring and computer. It's going good so far bc neither truck has the engine in them. Makes it easier lol. Hopefully I can get them swapped and the motor should run. I'll let you know how it goes.

Hi,

Let me know if I can help. If you need any wiring schematics, I can get them for you. Also, I thought your vehicle didn't have an EGR and the new engine does. If that is the case, it shouldn't cause the light to turn on simply because there is nothing to attach.

I may have it backwards. The original may have had one.

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Well, I have the engine installed. The truck starts and runs but my instrument gauges, radio, and A/C are not working. The needles on the gauges move just a little when the key turns on but they are not doing anything else.

Hi,

If none of them are working, something is disconnected, we have a ground issue (unlikely), or a blown fuse.

Here are the diagnostics for no gauges working. The attached pics are the actual diagnostics.

Hi,

That is Chrysler's scan tool with the software for their vehicles. By any chance can you get your hands on one? Also, you should be able to do it with a different tool if you have one that can actuate things and get into the different modules.

Let me know.

Hi guys. I have a DRB3 if you're near north central WI. I also use a Snapon Solus Edge.

With an extra plug-in card, the DRB3 will do emissions-related stuff on every brand of vehicle sold in the U.S. Starting with '96 models. For that reason a lot of independent shops bought them. They're obsolete now, so you might find a shop owner happy to sell theirs so they can invest in something newer. You can find them on eBay too.

Snapon is very proud of their annual updates for their scanners, and they charge accordingly for them, as in around $1,000.00 per year, and you can't skip any years. Look for one of these on eBay that is outdated. For example, if you find one that has been updated through the 2014 model year, a shop that wants to use it on customers cars would have to buy the 2015 update, at $1,000.00, before they could buy the 2016 update, then the 2017 update, etc. Four or five years of updates cost more than a new model with all the latest updates, so it doesn't pay. That makes them lose their value very quickly, and you can pick one up very cheaply. All you need is to find one updated enough to cover all of your vehicles.

Has anyone anyone ever tried one from Harbor Freight? I seen one on their web site that is supposed to work but I'm iffy about it lol. I'm still trying to figure this out. I took the gauges off of my 02 and tried it out. No good, it smoked and popped all my fuses. The little black box on the back was missing for some reason. Someone must have gotten it. The truck has been setting for about a year and a half. I put the 2005 gauges back in there but still nothing new. Gauge on the tachometer just barely moves off the needle rest. I really think there must be a difference in the wire harness but I can't find anything on the internet. I'll keep plugging away. Someone said I should call Hotwire auto and see if they can make me an adapter plug for under the dash. I don't know. I'll keep y'all posted.

Hi,

Some Harbor Freight tools are worth their weight in gold, and others, not so much. LOL Just make sure if you get one, to read what it is able to do and make sure it covers your vehicle.

Okay, I think I found one that'll work. I've found some wiring diagrams and it seems that the 2005 has an extra ground wire that wasn't in the 2002. G203. When in look at the 2002 diagrams it isn't in there. If I can find the g203 wire under the dash and ground it. Do you think that will fix my problem?

2002 diagram I looked at only has a G201. There are G202-G204, G302 and 303 also missing in the 2005.

Hi,

Try providing a ground and see if it helps.

The first three pics below are all the ground locations for the 02. The last three are for a 2005. See if anything there helps.
