Engine light is on

Took it to two places one says thermostat bad and then it just say. Engine running cold is it okay to drive.

Yes, but do not drive it like this for long, as the engine needs to get to operating temperature for best fuel economy, best exhaust emissions and with a cold engine, acids that build up in the oil are not burnt off and engine wear is a problem in the long term.
