Transmission problem
1992 Eagle Talon Front Wheel Drive Automatic 144000 miles

I have a 92 talon that keeps going in to safe mode where I am in 3rd gear. It works fine cold for a while anywhere from a few miles to 100 miles and then I loose it. I have had it in a tranny shop and they couldn't figure it out and tried to get me to pay them to rebuild it which doesn't make any sense to me since the problem appears to be electrical not mechanical and a rebuild doesn't change any of the electronics. When it is working properly their is no slippage or issues at all and even in safe mode it works good no motor slipping or noise or any noticable issues other than it stops shifting. Also their are no engine codes being set. I can't find any information on what cause it to go into safe mode or how to isolate the problem. Any ideas?

Hello paulfd
you're experiencing the kind of safe mode called
"immediate shutdown mode -- "The TCM deenergizes the transmission control relay and locks the transmission in 3rd gear when the shift lever is in the Drive position, or 2nd gear if the gear shift is in "2" or "L" position. The causes here is usually an internal transmission solenoid, sensor or pressure switch problem.

That doesn't help me much. It tell me more of what I already knew or suspected. What I need is a way to isolate which sensor or solenoid is causing the problem or at least a place to start. In my case no matter what gear secelection I am in it always fails in 3rd gear when it goes in either poer or economy mode with or with out the overdrive on. Even a list of which of the sensors or solenoids are hooked into this loop to see if I can jumper them out one at a time to test if they are the cause or?

The solenoid pack is in the transmission.

one of the solenoid for 3 gear might be stuck,or there is an electrical issue with that solenoid.transmission must be dissembled to access the solenoids . it is part of the of rebuilding the transmission .I wish i could tell which sensor or solenoid to jump.(sending the diagram to your email)
