Car runs usually runs fine but doesn't seem to like wet weather. Problem is occasional, usually a skip or misfire, but yesterday it had a couple of hard exhaust backfires.
Without spending tons of dough, where should I start?
I'm not a mechanic, but I can do most work myself

How long since a tune-up? Any applicable mil codes? You should be able to check those codes, yourself. To check, use a jumper wire between the A & B terminals at the datalink connector, then, turn key till the dash lites come on, no further. The mil on the dash starts flashing, you count the flashes to get the codes. You are looking for two digit codes. Let us know what you find.

There several issues that could cause a backfire, one is a valve.
