2001 Doge Ram, 65K Miles, 5.9 L 360 running rough

My Ram has started running very rough with a huge loss of power at times, sometimes there's a knocking sound. I have also noticed smoke from the tailpipe. One day it runs basically fine and the next not sure I will make it home. Would a diagnostic machine be able to tell me what's wrong?

If the check engine light is on, definately get it read. If it is running rough and blowing smoke, along with knocking, I'd have it checked out by a mechanic. Their are a number of mechanical issues that could be going on, and if you are not mechanically inclined would run into more problems trying to fix yourself rather than just shelling out a little extra dough to have it done.
