1987 Dodge Ram electrical short

With the headlights on bright, I have instrument lights. When I press the floor dim switch to low, the instrument lights go out. I replace the dimmer, with nthe same result and when I attemped to turn on the ignition, all elec power was lost. Can you advise the problem and cure.

Hello, make sure the battery has a full charge, And all battery connections are clean and tight on both ends. If your saying the starter won't even crank, then do some testing at the starter relay. It should be located under the hood, driver-side, in front of shock tower on the fender well. Did you try cranking in neutral?
