1996 Intrepid - 130,000 mi. "Check Engine" light comes on and off -- was told I needed an Oxygen Sensor - runs rough, but much better traveling over 50 mph. Can you please tell me exactly what this part is and an approximate cost to replace? Thanks.

The O2 sensor monitors the oxygen level of the exhaust from the motor. The cars computer recieves a voltage signal from the O2 sensor and uses this signal along with other signals it recieves to adjust the air/fuel mixture to current conditions. If the O2 sensor detects a large or small presents of oxygen in the exhaust the computer will make the necessary adjustments. The price for the part (no labor) varys and starts aprox $50 and up.
