I have a 2001 Dodge Intrepid. My car engine light came on last week and I took it to my usual auto shop. He ran a diagnosis and said there was a transmission error. He doesn't work on transmissions so that's all he could say. Leaving the shop the light was no longer on so I thought everything was fine. My car still drove the same with no unusual sounds. A week later (tonight) the light comes on again while leaving a parking lot after driving normally with no light all day. My car started to drive differently. Going at 30-40mph the RPM was around 3-4 which is much higher than normal. I pull over and turn the car off for a couple mintues. When I turn it back on and start driving the light is still on but the RPM at 30-40mph is now back to normal (around 1-2) and seems to drive fine. What's going on?

When your mechanic tested the engine he detected a problem that will cause your transmission to go into a 2nd gear only mode. It is referred to as "limp in" mode.
The idea is that the car can still drive fast enough to get to a repair technician who is experienced with this type of problem. Any Chrysler dealer should be able to fix it or give you a proper estimate. It is a common problem for a dealership technician and they have repaired them many, many times. It is not a maybe this will work type of repair and you should be thankful for your mechanic's honesty. Ok.
Every time you turn it off, it will automatically reset itself and be fine until the problem happens again. Fix it sooner rather then later for your best interests.
