This is definitely a new one for me. But it had to have been a failed part/bolts.

Has someone been working on your engine lately and maybe forgot to tighten the bolts?

Because there's simply no way that you cooling system could build up enough pressure to blow that metal component or it's bolts off of your motor.

First, there's a pressure relief valve located inside of your radiator cap. If pressures where to exceed it's limit (12-16 PSI), then it would open up and release it.

Second, if that cap was to malfunction and not release the pressure, then the next weakest link in the system would fail before the thermostat housing/bolts. (Radiator hose, heater core/hoses, overflow tank, radiator, etc.)

But whatever the reason for it happening, there's an underlying cause to why it happened. You'll have to find that out.
