2002 Dodge Dakota Gear shift issues

My truck will start, but when I try to shift out of park it won't shift. I can get the shifter to reverse, but my truck doesnt go in reverse. I cant' get it to shift any further than that however. Is this a serious problem? What can I do to get it to shift?

This may sound like a stupid question, but are the brake lights working? The brake light switch actuates the park lock solenoid.
