The car drives fine for about 15 minutes and then develops a moderate whistling sound in the engine followed by strange shifting. When we stop at a light it stops and then the engine jolts a bit and races, and then settles back down. Once or twice it has stalled. Then when we drive on, the car appears to downshift but is not dragging. We can still drive at high speeds. It also appears to briefly shift into neutral and then back again sometimes, especially when stopping or starting.

Could this be the transmission? Is it possible the transmission filter is dirty and causing the whistling sound because the pump is working harder? Does the car have an electronic shift selector and could this be causing the problem? Or is it simply the transmission is going?

We put a new transmission in the car about 6 years ago and have put on many miles since then.

Do you have check engine light on?
Check for codes and let me know what you have
Check engine operation and if vacuum leaks or in need of a tune-up
Check tranny fluid (level, color, smell)
Codes should indicate to what is going on

The check engine light is not on. I checked the fluids. While it is full, the color is sort of orange and definitely needs changing.
