I was changing the cabin filter in my vehicle and broke the damper string connected to the glove box. What is the purpose of this and is it necessary to fix it?

It is to keep your glove box from slamming open when you open the glove box. Which could damage your glove box hinges. If you let the glove box open by lowering it down with your hand each time you would be okay. Otherwise I would replace the dampener reel assembly.

Thank you so much. It did not seem to be critical. I will be careful opening the glove box, I rarely open it anyway. So great to have this place to ask questions.
