There are many things than can cause the engine to stop running suddenly both machanical and electronic things that can go wrong like fuel pump. Main fuze. Altornator to name a few. Evan a broken serpentine belt. The list goes on but worse case Unfortunatly this could be an indication that the timing belt could have broken or other engine components that would have cuased catastrophic damage to other parts of the enginge as a chain reaction. Thats said though these things normally would cast a trouble code wich would display a check engine light and give you insight as to what might have happend before hand . So theres a few unanswered questions. I think the best thing to do at this point to find out is take it into a shop to diagnose what went wrong and have it scanned to see what codes might be there. Thats a good start. Good luck hope this helps
