Vehicle suddenly stop shifting into first and third and only into second and fourth gears and making loud grinding noise while in neutral with clutch let out. Local mechanic says he cannot determine if the transmission has problems until I pay him $1,000.00 to replace the clutch first. Is there not a way that the transmission could be diagnosed to see if their is also a problem with the transmission before I go to expense of replacing clutch? The vehicle is not worth the cost of fixing both. I am confused, please help. Thanks

Good afternoon.

Get your car out of there to another shop that is honest.

A good shop will tell you the process of diagnostics. It does sound like you have a transmission issue but it needs to be removed and inspected before anyone can give you an idea of the failure and the cost.

This will not be cheap by any means. Any shop that wants money up front for a repair is not a shop you want to deal with.

What I really need to know from a certified mechanic is whether what this mechanic claims: "No mechanic certified or not can know if the transmission might have any problems before the clutch is replaced first" is true or false. Thanks for you patience, Steve

That is false.

You need to get your car out of there.
