Van shut down while being driven. My guesse is the fuel pump went out or the timing chain broke. Is there any easier method to eliminate the timing chain from the equation other than tearing into the engine?

Welcome, if the crankcase oil fill cap is in the valve cover, remove it, shine a lite in, if you can see mechanism, have helper crank engine, see if mechanism moves, if it does the chain isn't broke.

You might also check for codes. Check for a signal from the cam shaft position sensor.
