Many reason why would check engine come on
1st have to check for codes as codes should indicate to the trouble area

most part store should be able to scan it for free

also try this
engine off at all times
cycle ignition key ON OFF 3 times ending with it ON should be able to read codes in the odometer area (P_ _ _ _)

you can post back with the codes for more help
