I was wondering if someone could help me out. Yesterday as I was pulling out of my apartment complex, I lost the ability to turn my steering wheel, as if it locked on me just like it was in Park. I reversed my car back and made my turn into my parking space by pushing the steering wheel as hard as I could. What could be the possible problems here? I don't want to go to the mechanic and he charge me and arm and leg. Thanks so much.

You lost your power assist. This could be because your power steering fluid is low/empty, one of your hoses busted, your pump failed or the internal seals of your steering rack have failed.

The most common problem is the pump has quit. But you'll need a proper diagnoses to be sure.

And yes, most mechanics will charge a lot for this job. But shop around first. And don't be afraid to tell a mechanic that someone else is offering to do the job for less. In this economy, any mechanic will fight for your business.

If I've helped you, please take the time to vote for me, as my reputation pays my bills. Thanx, Ernest.
