I have a strange noise coming from under my Tahoe. The best way to describe the noise is like letting the air out of a balloon. Its not constant. It is coming from under the vehicle on the driver's side. A guy I know stuck a tube on various parts under there to see if he could hear where it was coming from and he said he heard it in the fuel system parts. He even said he heard it in the gas hole (where you put the gas in). Any ideas?

The only item in the tank that can cause a noise is the fuel pump. It may be getting ready to go bad. Is the vehicle still running ok?

Yes. The car seems to be running fine. We recently did spark plugs, wires, new fuel pressure regulator and A/C belt which the "missing" problem that I was having at idle and the fuel mileage that I was missing. Other than that, it runs fine.

Hi again:

Most likely it is the pump and there is no way to tell when it might stop. Confirm our beliefs with a mechanic because it's better to replace it before it goes bad and avoid a tow bill. The pump isn't too bad to replace.

Let me know if you have other questions.

I did take it to a local mechanic. They said that they can hear the fuel pump kick on and it seems to be running fine. That is why I tought I would try you guys. The fuel pump is $672 and before I have it replaced and still not solve the problem, I just wanted to check and see if you had any ideas. What are your thoughts on the evap system? The noise is the loudest right under the driver's door. Does that mean anything to you?

I can't think of anything in that area that would make the noise described. If the mechanic thinks the pump is running fine, you should get a second opinion. (I realize that was us, but I can't think in the area mentioned what would do this. There really isn't anything there unless the 4wd actuator is making the sound.) I wish I could hear it; it would make things easier.

Also, if it is determined to be the pump, I can walk you through how to replace it if you decide to do it yourself.
