I have a 1992 s10 manual truck. When I shifting between 4th and 5th gear it almost stutters like
I need to down shift when I don't. I floor it and black smoke comes out the exhaust and after it gets to 70mph it surges and runs fine. When it drops below 70 it stutters again. It does this in the lower gears too but not as badly. Also I drove 40 miles and it used $20 worth of gas.

Change your O2 (oxygen) sensors, the black smoke means you are running rich, and the O2 sensors, and MAF(at air cleaner) also the ECT(engine coolant temp) sensor. ECT is about $20.00, and acts a bit like a choke on EFI vehicles.
