Gas smell

I smell gas when I start my 1996 Chevy Corsica. And also my check engine light came on. It runs great. Can you tell me what might cause a gas smell. Doesnt last long. Thanks

Need to pull codes from the pcm to help answer that. Several possibilites exist.
The pcm will compensate for whatever is wrong(and why the CEL) is probably on. Whatever is wrong, it will ignore the offending sensor data and use a default value. You don't notice a problem because of this.
