Transmission problem
1989 Other Chevrolet Models V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic

Can you tell me what might cause my truck to be going along and then it was like it went into nuetral. It wont drive in any gear at all. I would appreciate some input on this. Every shop says we will have to tow it in for this cost and more then likely you need an overhaul. Help me please.

An automatic transmission will disengage if the computer doesn't know it's running. Odd I know. Check your fuses. There is a fuse that if you pull it the engine will still run, but the transmission will not get power. Then check any electrical connectors. Also check the fluid. You probably did that, but if it is a nice cherry red a rebuild is probably a step too far. Does your vehicle have a diagnostic test port? They liked to hide them in different places back then. I would recommend getting a computer to see if there are any codes before a mechanic takes anything apart.
