I need to replace the water pump in my 1999 Monte Carlo. It has about 180k on it, and has a 3.1 liter V6. The water pump hub is wobbling visibly when the engine runs and is getting worse. It is also starting to make quite a bit of noise. It looks relatively simple, but I don't know if I need to take off the entire aluminum housing that's attached to the block, or if the pump is just an insert. I can get the serpentine belt off, but I'm a little lost after that, and am not sure if I'm going to need a pump and kit of seals, and if I should get some sort of gasket sealer or not. Can you please help with directions, and what I'm going to need to replace? Thanks!

Hello and thanks for donating

To replace the water pump on this vehicle, you first must drain the cooling system and then remove the air cleaner assembly for some added clearance. Then you will loosen the water pump pulley bolts. Remove the drive belt. Remove the water pump pulley bolts and the pulley. Make a note of the position of the locator tab on the top of the water pump for installation reference. Remove the bolts, then the water pump and gasket can be removed. All you will need is some thread sealant to add to the water pump bolts and then a NEW gasket for the water pump. Line up the locator tab as mentioned before then tighten the bolts back up. Put the rest on and tighten all bolts up. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
