1997 Chevy Monte Carlo temp guage

After starting my temp guage varies wildly up and down and cool air comes out of the heater vents no matter where the guage is. After a while the guage will settle down to it's normal position and hot air comes out the vent. Will a new thermostat fix it?

Hello Jerry, I am sure you made sure the radiator is full & no air is trapped in system. If it is full I dont think a thermosat will cure this problem. Sounds like air trapped in system. Make sure radiator & overflow jug is full to proper level.
