What does it cost to replace a head gasket? And can you do it yourself without taking it in to a mechanic?

It can be done yourself but there is a risk. If the heads are warped. Youll being doing it again and having the heads reworked by a machine shop. If the car hasnt overheated too much and you think the heads are fine, you can easily be successful at this job. The cost can easily be figured out by going to your local auto part stores website. Heres a list of things you should get. 1. Head gaskets. 2. Intake manifold gaskets. 3. Valve cover gaskets. 4. A tube of High temp RTV. 5. Coolant. Now some gaskets can be re-used depending on how old, who installed it and how, patience in removing and all kinds of factors. Id save the trouble and just go with new ones. If you dont you run the risk of re-doing them later. People replace them everyday without checking the heads and are successful so dont let it scare ya but if the res any doubt. Have them checked and dont say I didnt warn ya. Lol Good luck. :)
