91 Lumina idle problem

My '91 Lumina with a 3.1 L V-6 and about 150,000 miles seems to surge RPM up and down when at an idle and then right at take off. Feels like the car is almost going to die then surges up RPM to about 1000 or so then back down again. Makes it a little unsafe right when taking off as I have to have my foot on the brake at all times in case I have to stop real fast.

Any ideas?

THANKS!

Have you changed your spark plug wires in awhile? I had similar issues on the same engine. Turns out I had 1 plug wire that was open. I replaced the wires, and plugs. Car ran great. Also check your IAC valve. It may be sticking.
