1998 Chevy Lumina how to un;ock stirring column?

1998 Chevy Lumina 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Just bought car from someone i no and really dont trust and want to just change out whole ignition with new key and all. is this possible.

Short answer, yes. You can do this, you have to remove the steering wheel and remove the lock cylinder trace the two orange wires down under the dash (above the pedal) to were they have a connection point. I know this becuse I've done it to my 1998 Lumina. It sounds alot easier than it really is. I am a GM mechanic so I do it all the time, there is a tool required to remove the steering wheel. My best advice is to take it to a GM dealer and have them do it. I say this because you are required to deal with the air bag and remove the air bag during this process, nothing you want to mess with if it goes off. Trust me. I purchased my switch for $60, and the key must be a VATs ket (little black chip) wich will bring your total to about $100, assuming you are doing it yourself. Each VATs key has a code 1-15, so you'll need to find that out before you get a key cut, all GM dealers have a boc to test it and cut one for you. Hope this helped.
