1998 Chevy Lumina Two Wheel Drive Automatic 193000 miles

The engine light in my car is on, but my car works fine. Im not sure why the light keeps coming on. Sometimes it goes off but then it comes back on agian. Any ideas?

A lot of possibilities and need to scan for codes
most local part stores should be able to help you in getting the codes
Codes will help in pin pointing what is happening and why is check engine light is coming on
and also will help in direction to where should start the diagnoses
