I was told my Lumina has a coolant leak
at the intake manifold due to a plastic washer
that has a tendency to melt from engine temp
on high mileage cars.

How difficult is this to repair?
Can my backyard mechanic do this safely or should
I take the car to a dealer?
What is a ballpark cost for this repair?

I am not sure of any plastic washer, but it sounds like the manifold gasket needs replacement, and it is not a hard job. your backyard mechanic should be able to take care of it. if you go to a dealer, they are going to over charge you, that is just what they do. a regular shop will charge approximately 250.00

Thank you. I was quoted $200-$250, so same
ballpark for cost. Yes, I know the dealers overcharge.
(and especially a woman- I have had some bad
experiences in the past)
Thanks again for your help!
