1992 Chevy Lumina Stalls when put in to gear

Ok so I have a 92 lumina wht about 86,000 miles on it. I was driving it around today for awhile and I get to my off ramp, and slow and break when I get to the stop it stalls, its never done this before. So I started it up in park, go to put it in drive it stalls right away. I do this again, in reverse, same thing. So one last try I start put it in N, and put my left foot on the break and the right on the gas, I give it a little and let go of the break, I was able to make it home. Whats wrong with my car I dont want it to break down on me again?

Has the check engine light come on? Also, have you checked for vacuum leaks?

No engine light>>> have not checked for leaks. Its practically brand new under the hood.
