Timing a 79 gm 305 while dead

I have a 79 305 engine that im putting back together from a rebuild( dont say it.I have money issues) I have the timing gears and chain replaced and sitting on the marks. How do I time it so it will work when I finally put it back in the blazer im putting it in? Is it just putting the distributor on the #1 and adjusting when it has power or what?

Yes if you have the timming gears lined up set your dist. On # 1 and loch it down may have to fine tune once running but it will start and run.
