Smell of gas - 2004 Impala

We have a 2004 Impala with 52,000 miles on it. For the past week or so, when we get in the car there is a strong gas odor in the car. When we start driving the car, the smell diminishes somewhat, but you can still smell it. But only slightly. Any ideas as to what the problem or cause could be? Thanks for te help!
