My 4 speed linkage kept getting hung up when I'd shift. When I checked the linkage, sure enough, several of the nuts that hold the 3 linkage arms to the trans. Were loose. When I tried tightening the nut on the reverse gear the bolt sheared off about 1/2 inch. I can now just barely get a nut on the bolt with no room for the lock washer.

Question: Can I remove that bolt (stud) and replace it w/o removing the trans? There's very little room. What would you suggest?

I would try removing the driveshaft, holding up trans with tranny jack remove trans crossmember, slowly lower trans till it hangs as low as possible, this might allow you enough room to replace stud. You might have to drill stud out and use a helicoil
