Service Engine soon light

1995 Corsica, 105590 4 cyl. When the car is started and allowed to warn up slowly the light does not come on. When I start it and just go, the light will come on a few miles down the road. If I stop and turn the engine off and wait a few minutes and restart the light does not come on. I have also noticed the the tempurture gauge goes past mid point and then goes back to normal just before the light comes on.

The temperatur gauge is probably just reacting to the cooling fan coming on.

The codes need to be pulled from the computer to start diagnosing this.
