2006 Chevy Cobalt engine light

I just bout my car used an after two days the engine light came on I took it to an auto parts store and they said I need a new fuel cap. Should I trust thier word or take it in to get looked at some more. Its my first car

Would be best to get the exact trouble code they pulled and post it here so I could give you better advice on it. A fuel cap that doesn't seal correctly can indeed cause engine light to come on with newer vehicles like this, but without the code I don't know for sure.
