The dial on my heater control is stuck on the front vents. I cannot get it to switch to the floor or to the front defrost. I took it to Pep Boys earlier this year and they said the cable that controls the vents in the dash is stretched out and needs to be replaced. The actual part was about $20 but because they had to go behind the dashboard they quoted me a price of around $280.00 to replace the cable. Is that price about right? Is there a way or a place to get it done less expensively? Thank you.

Changing the cable will only fix half the problem, these cables don't get streched out they bind up. If you replace only the cable you will have the same problem 2 weeks later. You have to replace the foam pad on the top of the mode door. It becomes loose and binds, which makes the cable bind. Yes you do have to take the top of the dash off. Pep boys is not a good place to take your car, call around for a better price. Call the dealer and ask how much to fix it.
