Engine Cooling problem
2001 Chevy Cavalier Automatic

My car overheated on the way to school 2 days ago. The heater stopped working, and my car smelled like something was burning. Assuming it was the thermostat, we replaced it. The new thermostat, still won't open. My dad and I warmed up the old thermostat and it opened just fine. What is preventing my thermostat from opening and causing my car to overheat?

If coolant is getting to the thermostat than the tstat should open. Could be blockage in radiator hose or faulty radiator not letting coolant get to tstat though. Or tstat is opening and the problem is elsewhere such as faulty water pump or bad heater core.
