Engine Cooling problem
1997 Chevy Cavalier Front Wheel Drive Automatic 87000 miles

My cooling fan only works when my A/C is on. The temperature gauge works fine, but the fan does not come on if the temperature gets on the high side (without the A/C on), which occurs if I am in "Stop and go" traffic. I know that there is a temperature sensor that mounts on the the engine. Is thiis the same sensor that feeds the temeprature gauge on the dashboard? If it is, then what else could be causing my cooling fan not to come on based on enginer temperature?

The best way to check it is get a scan tool and when the engine warms up, see if the fan request is on in the data stream. If it is, check and see if the PCM is sending a signal out to the fan relay. You can also check the relay and see if you can jump it to see if the fan works or not.
